This gene encodes a voltage-dependent anion channel protein that is a major component of the outer mitochondrial membrane. The encoded protein facilitates the exchange of metabolites and ions across the outer mitochondrial membrane and may regulate mitochondrial functions. This protein also forms channels in the plasma membrane and may be involved in transmembrane electron transport. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Multiple pseudogenes of this gene are found on chromosomes 1, 2 3, 6, 9, 12, X and Y.[provided by RefSeq, Sep 2010]

IR16-2 anti-VDAC1 antibody WB image
Anti-VDAC1 beta antibody - at 1/500 dilution.
Lysates at 60 μg per lane. This blot was produced using a 12% SDS-PAGE. Nitrocellulose membrane was then blocked for an hour before being incubated with IR16-2 overnight at 4°C.
Asterisk indicates a 53kDa band of unknown identity detected by this antibody in Western blot analysis.

Immunofluorescence: cells were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde for 10 min at RT, permeabilized with 0.1% NP-40 for 10 min at RT then blocked with 5% BSA for 30 min at room temperature. Cells were stained with IR16-2 anti-VDAC1 antibody (red) at 1:200 and 4°C. DAPI (blue) was used as the nuclear counter stain.
